My research employs a grounded theory approach that is ongoing and represented in phases that build on previous results. By analyzing data from my initial research (interviews), I will identify and code the responses to identify themes. In the next phase, I will use those themes as the starting point for additional research that supports development of categories that shape theory development. My objective is to account for how followership attitude is acquired and how followership attitudes can be developed.
When I developed my initial research proposal, I was working through my first research methods course and new to the research process. As a result, my proposal was very optimistic and failed to account for foundation building or progressive research. When the time came to follow through with my proposal, my new research mentor recommended that I begin by learning how people understand the basic concepts and then study how the attitudes are acquired and developed. I adapted my original proposal and scaled back my approach to answering my big questions.
